Coastal Restoration
Sand Dune environmental project Sand Dune restoration The work entailed the removal of existing timber piling and the construction of sand dunes and boardwalks for public access onto the beach. As with all Landmarc projects recycling of material moved off-site was paramount and all seven loads of old water logged timber piles were transported to Saltash near Plymouth for chipping and used as biomass fuel for the heating of glass houses. A new concrete slipway was constructed, new timber piles were installed and rock armour was used as sea defences on vulnerable areas of the beach. The site was then totally reprofiled by means of an intensive earth moving operation and sand then placed on the front of the new dunes. Existing vegetation from the site was removed and stored whilst the dunes were reprofiled and then relocated on the back of the dunes to help with establishment. Timber boardwalks were installed complete with anti-slip surface, again a recycled material. The National Trust then planted the dunes with approximately 20000 marram grass plants with the aid of local volunteers. These will help to prevent further erosion of the dunes at South Milton. This project has won award from Sustain magazine and been shortlisted for an award from the British Construction Industry Awards.
